Male Silverback gorillas gain the silver tinge on their back when they reach adulthood, usually when they are about 13 years old. Baby gorillas ride on their mothers back for the first 2-3 years of their lives. Gorillas in captivity have displayed significant intelligence and have even been able to learn basic sign language.
